“It’s always magic when we get together” says Putnam Smith, who became ‘brothers’ with fellow singer/songwriters Steven Bacon and Nate Spencer, after three formative weeks spent in Putnam’s log cabin in Maine. They first played music together when they met up at Folk Alliance International, in Memphis. “I invited them to come visit me at my cabin, and they stayed for three weeks. We kept playing music till 4 a.m. night after night. That’s how the Swamp Brothers were born. ” The name Swamp started out as a joke, referring to the road that Putnam’s cabin is on. Swamp Road Boys became Swamp Boys; by the time it had evolved into The Swamp Brothers, the name had stuck. These sessions, recorded at Steven’s place outside of Knoxville, Tennessee, after coming off a southern tour together, distills the spirit of the Swamp Brothers at their best. Recorded in a matter of days, on an analog reel-to-reel set-up, this album captures not only the feel of their vintage instruments, and the vibrancy of their songwriting, but also the joy of three friends getting together to share what they love most. “The Tennessee Sessions” marks their debut album as an acoustic trio.
